The Osa Peninsula

Pristine rainforests combined with the stunning shoreline of the Pacific Ocean form the rugged natural beauty of the Osa Peninsula and make this region among the most beautiful areas in the world. The Osa Peninsula has become a premier eco-tourism destination for the most discerning travelers. The southern most peninsula in Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula is a secluded natural wonderland and home to more than half of all animal and bird species living in the country, including many of the its most endangered – Puma, Jaguar, Spider Monkey, Harpy Eagle, Baird’s Tapir, Scarlet Macaw and the White Lipped Peccary.

The Osa Peninsula is also home to more than 750 species of trees, 117 species of reptiles and amphibians, 370 species of birds and over 120 species of mammals. The surrounding oceans are home to many species of whales, dolphins, sea turtles and fish.

Corcovado National Park is the largest national park in Costa Rica and protects about a third of the Osa Peninsula. It is widely considered the crown jewel in the extensive system of national parks and biological reserves spread across the country. The ecological variety is quite stunning. National Geographic has called it “the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity”. Not only is the park very popular with tropical ecologists, a visitor can expect to see an abundance of wildlife during a visit here.

Getting There

A bustling city nestled inside a tropical paradise and the capital of Costa Rica; San Jose sits in the center of the country in the Central Valley. Our guests fly into Santa Maria Airport in San Jose and either catch a connecting flight to Puerto Jimenez (approximately 50 minutes), or stay the night in San Jose and head out to Puerto Jimenez the next morning. We recommend that our guests use Sansa Air  for their in-country flights to and from Puerto Jimenez Airport.

Once in Puerto Jimenez, our guests rent a small 4×4 SUV next to the airport. Note: a 2-wheel drive vehicle is not recommended. We recommend that our guests use Alamo Car Rental in Puerto Jimenez  for their 4×4 SUV car rental. It is located adjacent to the airport.

Once our guests pick up their vehicle, they stock up on groceries right in town. The drive to the house is 17 kilometers and depending on road conditions, should take approximately 30-45 minutes or less.
